Is Your Panel Holding You Back?
Most homes built before 1990 have a 100-amp panel — designed for an era when homes had far fewer electrical demands. Today's homes run EV chargers, heat pumps, smart appliances, and high-draw HVAC systems that older panels simply weren't built for. Running your home at or beyond capacity creates heat, trips breakers, and in worst cases poses a fire risk.
Frequent trips — especially on specific circuits — mean your panel is struggling to keep up with demand.
Lights that dim when the dryer or AC kicks on are a classic sign your panel is being pushed to its limits.
A warm panel box or any buzzing or crackling sound is a serious warning sign — don't wait on this one.
Level 2 EV chargers require a dedicated 50-amp circuit. Many older panels can't accommodate this without an upgrade.
Adding square footage, a kitchen remodel, or a new AC system almost always requires more panel capacity.
Outdated or undersized panels can flag during home inspections and derail a sale. An upgrade protects your value.

Why Thompson Electric?
From quick repairs to full new construction — we handle it all with the
same care and professionalism.
The most common upgrade — doubles your home's electrical capacity and allows for modern appliances, EV chargers, and future-proofing. Required by most utilities when adding high-draw circuits.
For larger homes, multi-unit properties, or homeowners with multiple EV chargers and high electrical demand. Also common on new builds and large ADU projects.
Adding power to a detached garage, ADU, workshop, or backyard structure? A sub-panel feeds those spaces from your main panel without overloading a single circuit.
Older panels — especially Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and some older Challenger brands — are known to be problematic. We replace them with modern, code-compliant panels and clean up the wiring while we're at it.

Our Process
Most panel upgrades are completed in a single day. Here's exactly what happens from your first call to a fully powered home.

We come out, assess your current panel, your home's electrical load, and what you're planning to add. We give you an exact price — no hourly guessing.

Thompson Electric handles all permit applications with the city. No paperwork headaches for you. We also coordinate the SCE (Southern California Edison) meter disconnect in advance.

SCE disconnects the meter, we swap the panel, clean up the wiring, and reconnect everything. Power is typically off for 4–6 hours. Most jobs are fully complete in one day.

We schedule and attend the city inspection. Once it passes, your permit is closed out — your home is fully code-compliant and documented.

SCE reconnects the meter, you're back online, and your new panel is covered by our 6-month workmanship warranty. Job done.
